The best time to visit Kyrgyzstan depends on where you want to go. Bishkek and Issyk-Kul are good to visit from May to October, Son-Kul can be reached over the Kalmak-Ashuu pass from mid-May to mid-October, and the highest passes of the inner Tian Shan only open in June. If you are travelling independently by rental car, plan by the passes rather than by the calendar. Here is the overview month by month – from the experience of a car rental company in Bishkek that has seen for years when each route can be driven.
Best time to visit Kyrgyzstan at a glance

In short: the best time to visit Kyrgyzstan by rental car is June to September. If you want to see Issyk-Kul, the area around Bishkek and Son-Kul, you have five good months from mid-May to mid-October.
June to September: peak season for road trips
In these months the whole of Kyrgyzstan can be reached by car. Son-Kul lies at 3,016 m, shepherds’ yurts stand on its shores, and even in July the temperature drops to zero at night. The Kalmak-Ashuu pass (3,446 m) on the northern side is open from mid-May to mid-October, the Moldo-Ashuu on the southern side for a slightly shorter period. The road to Kel-Suu, south of Naryn, can now be driven all year round; the fords carry the most water in June, and for this border zone you need a border permit.
The lowlands get hot. Bishkek regularly reaches 35 °C in July, and the Fergana valley around Osh even more. Most travellers therefore spend the days in the mountains and drive to Issyk-Kul for the night – the lake’s water reaches 20–22 °C in August. Thunderstorms often build over the mountains in the afternoon; if you set off early, you cross the passes in the dry.
What peak season means in practice: the 4×4 fleets in Bishkek are small, and July and August are booked up three to six months ahead. If you need a rental car in Kyrgyzstan for the summer, book in winter.
May and October: shoulder season with limits
In May the lowlands are green and pleasantly warm, but there is still snow in the mountains. You can drive the north shore of Issyk-Kul, the Chui valley with the Ala-Archa gorge, the road to Karakol and the main road to Osh, which runs through the Töö-Ashuu tunnel and is open all year. From mid-May, Son-Kul is added. Tash Rabat can be reached from May, the highest passes of the inner Tian Shan usually only from June. In spring, the state of the passes changes from week to week – ask us before you book.
October is the quietest good month: clear air, yellow poplars along the rivers and hardly any other travellers. Son-Kul can be reached until mid-October; the highest passes often close with the first snow as early as late September. Routes around Issyk-Kul, to Karakol and into the gorges of the south shore (Jeti-Oguz, Skazka canyon) stay easy to drive until the end of October.
In both months, the roads in the lowlands are clear, but the gravel tracks in the mountains are soft and the rivers are full. A 4×4 is not an option here but a requirement. Which routes are closed to rental cars in general is listed on the page Forbidden roads and restricted areas.
November to March: winter in Kyrgyzstan
Winter is not the time for a road trip through the mountains. The passes are closed, the tracks are under snow, Bishkek sees −10 to +5 °C and often smog in January. What you can do: day trips from Bishkek to the Ala-Archa gorge, the north shore of Issyk-Kul and the Karakol ski resort. Winter tyres are mandatory for this. If you want to rent a car during this period, ask us in advance.
Best time to visit Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan together
Many travellers combine Kyrgyzstan with Uzbekistan: first Samarkand and Bukhara, then the mountains. The two countries have opposite climate windows. Uzbekistan is pleasant in April–May and September–October, but barely bearable in July and August at over 40 °C. That is exactly when Kyrgyzstan is at its best. The compromise is September: the heat in Uzbekistan has eased, and the passes in Kyrgyzstan are still open. The second choice is late May to early June – Uzbekistan is not yet scorching hot, and Son-Kul can already be reached in Kyrgyzstan.
Two things to keep in mind when planning: rental cars from Kyrgyzstan may not cross the border, and there are no one-way rentals to Tashkent. The usual approach is a round trip through Uzbekistan by train or with a driver, then a flight or a border crossing to Bishkek and a rental car there for the Kyrgyz part – we hand over cars in Bishkek only.
Which time of year for which route
- Issyk-Kul loop (north and south shores, Karakol): May to October. Swimming in July and August.
- Son-Kul: mid-May to mid-October via the Kalmak-Ashuu. The yurt camps by the lake are open from June to September.
- Naryn, Tash Rabat, Chatyr-Kul: Tash Rabat from May, Chatyr-Kul June to September.
- Kel-Suu: accessible all year, best from July to September; border permit required.
- Osh and the south via the main road: all year, most pleasant in May–June and September–October.
- Karakol as a trekking base (Ala-Kul, Altyn Arashan): July to September.
- Wild camping with a rooftop tent: June to September – above 2,500 m it gets cold at night even in high summer; more in the post Is camping allowed in Kyrgyzstan?
Practical tips for planning your trip
- Passes follow the weather, not the calendar. A pass that was open in mid-May last year may stay closed until June in a snowy year. We tell you the current state before handover.
- Allow for altitude. Between Bishkek (800 m) and Son-Kul (3,000 m) there can be a 30-degree temperature difference on the same day. Pack a fleece and a hat, even in August.
- Make use of daylight. In June it stays light until after 9 pm, in October it gets dark at 6 pm. Driving gravel tracks at night is not a good idea in Kyrgyzstan – what the roads expect of you is covered in Driving in Kyrgyzstan and Types of roads in Kyrgyzstan.
- Book early. For May to September, reserve your 4×4 three to six months ahead – for July and August, rather six; for October a few weeks are usually enough. Why booking early pays off is explained in When to book your 4×4 for Kyrgyzstan. Current availability and models are on our fleet page.
